“If you can’t see the good, make the good” –Rowan Windham

When Rowan Windham first spotted collection bins for the “End Summer Hunger Cereal Drive” at Methodist Children’s Hospital, he did not let his post-surgery recovery, or the walls of his hospital room, stop him from donating almost 4,000 cereal boxes.

By the age of 10, Rowan had spent one-third of his life battling Shwachman-Diamond syndrome, with more than 1,000 hospital days and 100 surgeries. Yet he always strived to help others and make the good in situations where it was hard to see any.

He passed away in December 2016.

The Rowan Windham Memorial Cereal Drive is moving on to its fourth year of giving to children in the community by helping end summer hunger. The cereal drive will be from May 31 to June 6 at BioBridge Global as one of the numerous donation sites in San Antonio and New Braunfels.

“I just can’t imagine kids wanting to go to school just so they could eat,” said Carrie Windham, Rowan’s mother. She added the importance of the cereal donations is to feed one child all week – even from one box of cereal.

“It’s important to give when we can and where we can…it’s not that difficult and it is changing the world because you’re helping feed kids.”

Susan Smith has been the coordinator for the cereal drive at BioBridge Global and is also the Grief Support and Life Legacies Manager at GenCure. She said one of the main goals of the drive is to keep Rowan Windham’s legacy alive.

In previous years, the cereal drive’s projected serving goal has always been exceeded. This year the serving goal is 225,000, which Carrie and Smith believe will be met with support from BioBridge Global.

“In the past we’ve really tried to include our blood donors and board members from organizations in the community to help donate, but this year we’re really focusing on our staff to donate,” Smith said. “We’re doing this to support what Rowan would have wanted.”

All donations honoring Rowan Windham will be delivered to Methodist Children’s Hospital. Visit SAhealth.com to be a part of the effort.
