Patients across the nation are in trouble. The pool of donors providing millions of Americans with lifesaving blood is declining at a rapid rate. Roughly 45% of the nation’s blood donors are older than 50, and as the population ages, it gets harder to maintain the levels needed to save lives.

This World Blood Donor Day, June 14, the Blood Centers of America (BCA) and the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC) are highlighting the critical need for blood donations. To help engage a new generation of young donors, STBTC and BCA have joined forces with Team Liquid, a multi-regional, professional esports organization with a national base of more than 7 million gamers.

The partnership targets a key demographic. Less than 20% of blood donations come from millennials (age 20-34 years), and young males donate at even lower rates.

“This generation has the opportunity to step up and save millions of lives by becoming regular blood donors,” said Elizabeth Waltman, Chief Operating Officer of STBTC.

Limited edition “Team Liquid Turns Red” T-shirts will be offered as an option for donors at STBTC donor rooms and selected mobile blood drives, including Northwest Vista College (June 24-26) and UTSA (June 25-27).

The year-long program will feature a number of promotions, which will be announced in the coming months. In San Antonio, STBTC has joined with Shenanigans Gaming LLC to help educate the community about the need of blood donations and to host gaming tournaments.

“We’re proud to partner with Blood Centers of America and its members on this lifesaving initiative,” said Steve Arhancet, Co-CEO of Team Liquid. “Our fans are such a supportive, tight-knit community, and now we’re calling on them to help us accomplish something bigger than what we could achieve in any competition. Collectively, we have the opportunity to make a measurable impact on communities as well as save lives.”

Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, and one whole pint of blood can help save up to three lives. As the largest network of blood centers in the Unites States, Blood Center of America members ensure donated blood reaches patients at hospitals and health systems nationwide.
