Heart Month- a whole lot of Red, a whole lot of love, a whole lot of health!
February 1, 2012
It’s February. All that is red and heart-shaped is front and center. Already, social networks are abuzz with pictures of jewelry, flowers, romantic destinations and plans that should help anyone create the perfect Valentine’s Day for their special someone. But it’s not all commercialism. February is also “Heart Month” and the conversation has increasingly become more focused on heart-health. As an organization which relies on an army of healthy people to save lives through blood donation, we celebrate heart health. We want to remind our donors that each time they donate; they earn points to redeem for select health screenings at no cost. One of the tests offered is the lipid profile which can help you determine the risk of coronary heart disease. The lipid profile is a group of tests that includes a check of your total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL or good cholesterol), low density lipoprotein (LDL or bad cholesterol) and triglyceride levels. To get an accurate and true cholesterol screening, you should fast nine to 12 hours before the test. Because having high cholesterol increases your risk of developing heart disease, testing your blood for cholesterol can be a matter of life or death. Donors can redeem their points online and then make an appointment to get the test done whenever it’s convenient. Points can also be transferred to someone over 18 who can benefit from this test or donated to the American Heart Association so that others in our community can take advantage of these wellness screenings. This February we hope you have the best of Valentine’s Day ever and we wish you all the health your little heart desires!
