The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC), a subsidiary of nonprofit BioBridge Global, in collaboration with Las Palapas Restaurants, will provide San Antonio donors with a coupon and FREEquent buyer card for three free Las Palapas breakfast tacos for every blood and platelet donation in October.

The center is still recovering from a summer that saw a 20 percent drop in collections and hopes the new donor recognition gift will encourage people to schedule a donation.

“We know our donors don’t give blood because they get food or a t-shirt, but we hope they recognize that we truly appreciate their time and effort to help patients in the communities we serve,” said Dr. Samantha Gomez Ngamsuntikul, STBTC associate medical director. “We’ve had some great local partners in the past, and we hope our donors enjoy this small token of our appreciation.”

While all blood types are needed, donors with O-negative and O-positive blood are especially encouraged to donate. Every year, more than 600,000 units of O-negative are used in emergencies, on top of the needs of people undergoing everything from surgery to cancer treatments.

For more information or to schedule a donation appointment, donors can visit SouthTexasBlood.org/Tacos.

The center serves a 44-county area of South Texas and hopes the thank-you gifts will further motivate volunteer donors. Those donating lifesaving blood and platelets should set aside one to two hours of their time, depending on donation type.

To best accommodate donors, the center operates seven donor rooms in San Antonio, New Braunfels and Victoria. For more information and to schedule a donation, donors can visit SouthTexasBlood.org or call 210-731-5590.
