Lets go, 210! Feb. 10 is officially UTSA 210 Day, a celebration of the bond between the UTSA Roadrunners and the City of San Antonio. As part of the 210 Rally Cry, South Texas Blood & Tissue is hosting a blood drive at UTSA Main Campus.

Those who donate will receive an exclusive 210 UTSA Blood Donor T-shirt, a great way to support the Roadrunners and our community:

Mesquite Room

Monday, Feb. 10
8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

One UTSA Circle
San Antonio, TX 78249

The blood drive is in honor of Mia, a 10-year-old who is an honorary member of the UTSA women’s basketball team.

Mia was 8 years old when she began getting strange bruises and abnormal, profuse nosebleeds. Her mother Teresa took her to the emergency room. Mia’s nosebleeds were so strong, she needed an immediate transfusion because of blood loss. It was then when doctors diagnosed Mia with leukemia. It was New Years Day, 2021.

Since her first diagnosis, Mia has had multiple transfusions including platelets, red blood cells and more. Teresa says blood donations have helped Mia continue treatment. It was tough. Mia endured harsh skin reactions, back and leg pain, and lost her appetite and hair.

“Once she got the blood transfusions, she was back to her normal self. She eats better, she’s hungry again. It gives her energy to spend time in the pool with her siblings. She might chase the dog around. It’s real nice to see that change,” says Teresa.

To make sure no patient must wait for a blood transfusion, Teresa and Mia have made it a mission to host blood drives and encourage others to donate.

“We’re doing this blood drive because we understand how vital it is for her life and other patients,” said Teresa. “People ask what they can do, and this is what they can do for us: Donate blood.
