Join the organ and tissue donor registry, earn a ‘hero’s heart’

When you register to be an organ, eye and tissue donor while renewing your Texas driver’s license or ID, you’ll earn a “hero’s heart” insignia on your new card.

The red heart with the word “Donor” will be in the bottom right corner of your license, thanks to a program launched in 2006 between Donate Life Texas and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

According to Donate Life Texas, more than 15 million people have joined the registry when applying for or renewing a Texas driver’s license or ID card. Of all the people who have joined the registry in Texas, 2,600 have become organ donors, with thousands more donating tissue and corneas.

When someone makes the decision to become a donor, they are giving the gift of life and healing—a way to help others live free from pain, allow families to hold their children and grandchildren and regain independence and return to work.

Donate Life Texas reports that the need for organ and tissue donors is great: On average, 22 people die every day while waiting on the organ donor list, and there are 113,000 men, women and children awaiting organ transplants across the United States.

A typical tissue donation—which can include bones, skin, ligaments and tendons, blood vessels, and heart valves—can help up to 75 people. The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center works in a 32-county region to collect donated tissue for patients across the nation.
