The Countdown to the 5 millionth milestone is underway this Labor Day week.
The Countdown begins! South Texas Blood & Tissue expects to reach its 5 millionth blood donation sometime during the week of September 1st, when one special donor will make history. Could it be you?
In July, Mayor Ron Nirenberg and South Texas Blood & Tissue asked the community to participate in the “5 Million in 50” challenge: an initiative to help the blood center reach its 5 millionth donation within 50 days, during its 50th anniversary year.
The person who makes the 5th million donation will receive a special gift from South Texas Blood & Tissue and will be recognized publicly for their contribution to saving lives.
In addition to saving up to three lives, the donor’s name will forever be a part of South Texas Blood & Tissue’s rich history, dating back to 1974, when the South Texas Regional Blood Bank opened its doors.
South Texas Blood & Tissue provides blood to more than 100 hospitals in 48 counties, making a difference for accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and those undergoing treatment for cancer or sickle cell disease require regular transfusions.
“The last four or five years, the blood bank here in our community has been on the front page of every effort we have made to save lives,” Nirenberg said in July.
Donors are encouraged to schedule a donation at SouthTexasBlood.org or call 210-731-5590.
