Spring Break blood donation urged as travel expected to impact supply

South Texas Blood & Tissue encourages Spring Break blood donation at donor centers March 8–11

SAN ANTONIO – As Spring Break approaches and thousands of families prepare for travel, South Texas Blood & Tissue is encouraging blood donations to help maintain the community blood supply.

Across the nation, patients need 30,000 units of red blood a day, according to America’s Blood Centers and other U.S. blood organizations. Trauma injuries, cancer treatment, surgeries and chronic illnesses rely on a steady blood supply. These needs continue to exist even during times when fewer people are available to donate.

Spring Break poses new challenges for blood centers. With school closures and increased travel, donation numbers dwindle, while emergency rooms see an uptick of trauma-related emergencies tied to travel and outdoor activities.

To help maintain a stable blood supply, South Texas Blood & Tissue is asking community members to participate in Spring Break blood donation from March 8–11 at any donor center.

Appointments can be scheduled using the promo code SPURS.

Spaces will fill quickly for this winning combination, so donors need to schedule a donation by visiting SouthTexasBlood.org or calling 833-You-Give (833-968-4483).
