January landmarks illuminate to raise awareness during National Blood Donor Month
SAN ANTONIO – Across the United States, January is recognized as National Blood Donor Month. The commemoration was launched in January 1970 by President Richard Nixon to thank donors for their generous gift of blood.
To help increase awareness of the need for blood donations, San Antonio is going red in January. Several local landmarks will be turning their lights red from Jan. 5-9, including
Alamo Quarry Market Smokestacks
City Hall
North Star Mall Giant Boots
Tobin Center
The Pyramid Building
Texas A&M University San Antonio
It is a reminder to the community that less than an hour of time can help save the lives of three people. We encourage everyone to help their community and donate blood. All donors are appreciated, but O blood donors are especially needed as supplies are low across the country, including South Texas.
“Blood is something that cannot be recreated or artificially made,” said Audra Taylor, Vice President, Blood Operations for South Texas Blood & Tissue. “We still rely on the generosity of donors. Blood is one of those gifts that cannot be bought or put under a tree, and it is invaluable for our community. We thank every donor that has given the gift of life.”
Other organizations and businesses are encouraged to participate and go red Jan. 5 – 9 and support blood donations in our community.
