Donors who give at the Bonham Exchange blood drive will receive a Give with Pride tank top.
SAN ANTONIO – This June, donors can take pride in their blood donations, as South Texas Blood & Tissue is teaming up with the Bonham Exchange to host a blood drive on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.
This drive time comes at a critical time as donations in the community drop by 25% during the summer. Despite the decline, the need for blood does not stop. Blood transfusions are one of the top procedures performed in hospitals on a daily basis.
We encourage all in the community to participate in this inclusive event. Everyone who donates will receive a special Pride tank top.
Blood donation in the U.S. has become more inclusive, as discriminatory barriers have been lifted to encourage a wider range of donors.
In 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration changed its guidelines for blood donations by gay and bisexual men, basing eligibility on individual risks for exposure to HIV instead of simply on sexual orientation. This change in policy allows for a lot more donors to help save lives.
The FDA guidance updated eligibility screening procedures based on both scientific research and results from blood centers in the United Kingdom and Canada.
“While these changes have taken far too long, I am excited that blood donation is evolving to reflect the values of equity and inclusion and strengthen the bonds of our community,” said District 1 Councilwoman Sukh Kaur. “This milestone drive isn’t just about saving lives, it’s about showing that everyone has a place, a purpose, and the power to make a difference together.”
