Mobile drives will offer an H-E-B gift card and coupon for Café Ole specialty coffee
This holiday season, H-E-B is giving back to those who give. From Nov. 1 to Dec. 31, anyone who donates blood at a mobile drive will receive an H-E-B gift card valued anywhere from $10-$150.
Donors also will receive a coupon for a bag of H-E-B’s Café Olé coffee, sustainably sourced from more than 20 coffee regions internationally. The flavors range from Texas pecan to dulce de leche, as well as blends representing major Texas cities.
The coupon is good for one 12-ounce bag of coffee (ground or whole beans), or a 12-count box of single pods.
Holidays are the perfect time to donate blood. It cannot be bought, and it saves lives of numerous patients every year, including 3-year-old Cali who was diagnosed with Alpha Thalassemia Major before being born.
Thalassemia is a genetically inherited blood disorder where the body doesn’t make enough hemoglobin. Without hemoglobin, the body doesn’t receive oxygen. Doctors said baby Cali wouldn’t survive.
Her mom Clarissa participated in a clinical trial in which an intrauterine blood transfusion was used to transplant Clarissa’s stem cells to baby Cali. Intrauterine blood transfusions are performed by taking donor blood and injecting it into the baby through the mother’s belly.
Baby Cali was born weighing 4 pounds and had already received more than nine transfusions. Since then, Cali needs to receive blood transfusions every four weeks and will need them the rest of her life.
“She’s our little miracle baby and deserves to experience the joys of life,” Clarissa said. “Blood donors are what’s keeping her alive and healthy. There aren’t enough words to express my gratitude because donating blood is such a lifesaving, selfless act. I’m eternally thankful to those who take the time to donate.”
