Camp Discovery is an experience for children living with cancer
SAN ANTONIO – Blood donors can double their impact in the community by helping send a child living with cancer to summer camp. Every June, South Texas Blood & Tissue partners with Camp Discovery, a summer camp for children 7-16 years old that are living with cancer.
Donors receive points after every blood donation made, which can then be donated to Camp Discovery. Last year, donors helped sponsor 23 children to camp.
Provided at no cost to families, Camp Discovery is a week-long experience for children living with serious health conditions to create memories, friendships with other children, and personal growth.
The camp has made lasting impressions on many children, including David James Trujillo. At age 2, David was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia, a potentially fatal blood cancer. For years, he underwent chemotherapy. While other children were going to school and playing sports, David spent his childhood in and out of hospitals.
Camp Discovery left a lasting impact on David when he was a child. He recalls meeting other children going through the same things and finding camaraderie and joy in shared experiences. Now, at 36 years old, he is volunteering as a counselor at the camp to give back.
“I was once that kid, and Camp Discovery gave me a chance to connect with others who understood my experience,” David recalls. “Seeing their strength inspired me to give back. I knew I had to be there for them, just like others were there for me.”
“It’s about living and helping others along the way,” he says. “That’s what life is really all about.”
A quarter of all blood transfusions every year go to patients with cancer.
