From Jan. 6-10, local iconic landmarks will turn their lights red for the National Blood Donor Month.
This January, South Texas Blood & Tissue and the Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) want to thank blood donors during National Blood Donor Month.
As part of the commemoration, from Jan. 6-10 local landmarks including the Alamo Quarry Market smokestacks, North Star Mall Cowboy Boots, the Tower of the Americas and The Tobin Center are turning their lights red to bring awareness to the cause.
Since 1970, January has been designated as a month to honor and celebrate the incredible generosity of America’s volunteer blood donors.
In Proclamation 3952, President Richard Nixon praised the selflessness of donors, lauding them for their “concern for his fellowman” and “countless acts of voluntary service to the less fortunate, the sick. and the injured.”
“No manifestation of this generosity of spirit is more expressive, and no gift more priceless in time of personal crisis, than the donation of one’s blood,” Nixon said in the proclamation. “The voluntary blood donor truly gives life itself.”
All healthy, eligible individuals are encouraged to make an appointment to donate blood during the month, as the challenges facing the blood supply are often exacerbated this time of year as winter weather and seasonal illnesses often cause donors to postpone giving.
Donors can schedule a blood donation for upcoming community blood drives by visiting SouthTexasBlood.org or call 210-731-5590.
