As the sun has set this week, the iconic San Antonio skyline has glowed with vibrant blue and green lights. Five local landmarks have collaborated with South Texas Blood & Tissue to shine a light on the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donations.
The hues are a powerful symbol of hope and awareness during Donate Life Month, a cause close to the hearts of many. The initiative looks to hopes to encourage residents to register as donors while honoring those who have donated posthumously.
The landmarks:
- Alamo Quarry Market smokestacks
- North Star Mall boots
- Pyramid Building off 410
- University Health System’s Robert B. Green Hospital (in support of the University Health Transplant Institute)
- Tobin Center for the Performing Arts
Tissue donations help heal individuals suffering from conditions like burns, joint injuries, and heart valve replacements. In 2024 alone, more than 470 tissue donations were recovered in collaboration with more than 100 hospitals and medical centers across 25 counties.
Organ and tissue donations play a crucial role in saving lives and improving the health of countless people.
In the United States, more than 100,000 people are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. Every eight minutes, someone is added to the transplant waiting list.
For many, the hope of a second chance at life rests in the hands of generous donors who have made the decision to share the gift of life through organ, eye, and tissue donations.
It’s simple to help—those who want to join the cause or check their donor status can visit DonateLifeTexas.org/SouthTexasBlood to register, or visit SouthTexasBlood.org/DonateLife to learn more.
Additionally, information about the Donate Life registry will be available at South Texas Blood & Tissue’s donor rooms throughout the month.
