South Texas Blood & Tissue is once again helping blood banking colleagues south of the border. The organization recently donated medical equipment – six electronic blood pressure cuffs and two vein viewers – to the blood bank at the Hospital Universitario Dr. Jose Eleuterio Gonzalez in Monterrey, Nuevo León. More of the older-model devices will be headed south soon.
The exchange is the first between STB&T and the hospital’s blood bank. It was arranged by Sandra Anaid Zamora, a student at the Facultad de Medicina UANL who is a cousin of Armando De Hoyos, Equipment Control Coordinator, Blood Donor Collections for STB&T.
Sandra is part of a student group called Quilud that promotes blood donations.
Armando said the staff at the hospital blood bank was appreciative of the donation, which will assist with blood donor screening and collection.
“Even before receiving the equipment, they were already telling my cousin how excited and grateful they were,” he said.
STB&T previously has donated four older bloodmobiles to the Global Blood Fund, which assists Mexican blood banks with refurbishing them and putting them back in service.
