We encourage all residents to register as tissue, organ and eye donors.
South Texas Blood & Tissue has partnered with several landmark buildings in San Antonio to light up the nighttime skyline in blue and green to raise awareness for Donate Life Month, observed in April. This month, Americans are encouraged to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors and honor those who have saved and enhanced lives through the gift of donation.
From Monday, April 8 – Friday, April 12, the following buildings will be lighting up for Donate Life Month:
Alamo Quarry Market Smokestacks – 255 E. Basse Road, San Antonio, Texas 78209
Alamodome – 100 Montana Street, San Antonio, TX 78203
Pyramid Building – 601 NW Loop 410, San Antonio, TX 78216
In support of University Health Transplant Institute – Robert B. Green Building – 903 W. Martin Street, San Antonio, TX 78207
Tobin Center for the Performing Arts & Tobin Parking Garage – 100 Auditorium Circle, San Antonio, TX 78205
How do tissue donations help the community?
Tissue donations can help heal patients who are being treated for burns, joint repairs, heart valve replacements and several other conditions. In 2023, South Texas Blood & Tissue partnered with 102 hospitals and medical care facilities in 25 counties to recover tissue donations.
Additionally, South Texas Blood & Tissue has partnered with the University Health Transplant Institute for several of these tissue recoveries. Their state-of-the-art Time and Cathy Center for Life facility was founded in 2020 and helps support organ, eye, and tissue recovery for the region in a way that improves the life-saving potential of all types of gifts.
More than 100,000 people are waiting for a lifesaving transplant in the United States. Every 8 minutes another person is added to the national transplant waiting list. These individuals rely on the generosity of organ, eye and tissue donors, and there are not enough donors to meet the urgent need.
