All blood donors will receive a Fiesta medal and bragging rights for their district
For the fifth time since 2020, members of the San Antonio City Council will be participating in the “SA Challenge” to donate blood from April 7-16.
Councilmembers will sponsor blood drives with South Texas Blood & Tissue within their districts in a friendly competition to bring in the most donors.
SA Challenge blood drives are normally scheduled during times of the year when the blood supply dips, as schools are out on breaks. Currently, there is a 2-day supply of all blood types, short of the 6-day goal to adequately supply area hospitals.
All donors who participate in the upcoming SA Challenge drives will receive an exclusive South Texas Blood & Tissue 2023 Fiesta medal and be entered to win XFL Brahmas tickets.
City councilmembers joining in the District Challenge are:
- Mario Bravo, District 1: St. Mary Magdalen Church on April 16
- Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, District 2: St. Paul United Methodist Church Hall on April 14
- Phyllis Viagran, District 3: Texas A&M University on April 10
- Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia, District 4: Christa McAuliffe Middle School on April 14
- Teri Castillo, District 5: Memorial Library on April 10
- Melissa Cabello Havrda, District 6: Vale Middle School on April 10
- Rosie Castro, District 7: Stevenson Middle School on April 14
- Manny Peláez, District 8: University United Methodist Church on April 11
- John Courage, District 9: Walker Ranch Senior Center on April 7
- Clayton Perry, District 10: Catholic Life Insurance Building on April 10

Blood transfusions are the most frequently performed procedures in U.S. hospitals, requiring more than 33,000 donations per day to meet patient needs. One in seven patients entering the hospital will need at least one transfusion.
