Students

Hey, Students! Ready to make an impact?

Our community is impacted by students like you who make the choice to step up and give back. Are you ready to join the generation that saves lives?

Check out our programs designed just for you.

Why are students so special?

Schools that host donation events – and the students that make them a success – do incredible things for patients in need. They represent 22% of the yearly total blood collected by your community blood center.

Encourage your school to join Generation Give

Generation Give is a contest for STBTC-area high schools, designed to educate students about the importance of giving blood.

The Competition:

Your total high school enrollment determines which division your school fits into. Each school has up to three chances to win:

  1. Highest percentage of blood donations in each division. Based on high school enrollment.
  2. First place is $750.
  3. Second place is $350.
  4. Most units of blood donated in each division.
  5. First place is $750.
  6. Second place is $350.
  7. Any school that hosts four or more drives will be entered in a drawing for a $700 gift card. Gift certificates are nonrefundable, nontransferable, no cash value.

The Guidelines:

  • Schools must host at least two blood drives to be entered into the competition. All drives must be held on school property.
  • Anyone 16 years old weighing 120 pounds (with a parental consent form) or at least 17 years old weighing 110 pounds, and in good general health, can donate blood.
  • Friends and family members are eligible to participate.

Participate in our Honors Cord Program

The Honors Cord Program acknowledges the students who are making significant contributions to our community

At their graduation awards ceremony, STBTC will award one red honor cord to each senior who has given blood six times in their lifetime.

How does the program work?

  1. STBTC will provide school representatives with a list of student donors who have donated six times and qualify for their honors cord.
  2. School reps will review the list, verify seniors and return it to STBTC before your school’s scheduled senior awards ceremony or graduation.
  3. The cord will be provided before your awards event or graduation. If requested, a STBTC staff member will personally present the Honors Cord to you at your ceremony.

For more than 45 years, the nonprofit South Texas Blood & Tissue Center has focused on a critical purpose: to save and improve lives.

Inspired by a group of physicians, our organization was formed to provide blood to the South Texas region – ensuring a safe and adequate blood supply through proper testing, storage and distribution to hospitals. This essential service allows front-line workers to focus on the direct care of patients, with confidence that this lifesaving resource will be there when it’s needed most.

But we didn’t stop there. Over the years, we’ve evolved as the needs of our patients and hospitals have changed, driven to save lives in as many ways as possible.

We couldn’t do this without donors like you. We understand that the gift of donation is a personal, powerful choice that has the potential to touch a life. Today, we offer many ways to make a difference that include:

Our team has also expanded its programs, partnering with leaders within the healthcare industry to develop a wide range of therapies.
